What Are Crowns And Bridges?

Crowns and bridges are fixed tooth replacement options as opposed to removable prosthetics like dentures. A crown is a cap that encases a damaged, discolored, or vulnerable tooth to protect it from damage. A bridge is a prosthesis that replaces between 1-3 consecutive missing teeth.

Bridges utilize the abutment teeth on either side of the gap and place dental crowns over top. A pontic tooth is then attached to dental crowns to fill in the space of the missing tooth. Crowns and bridges are cemented into place so they cannot be removed at home, only by a qualified Manhattan dentist.

What to Expect During the Placement Process

Consultation – You’ll first come into our NYC office for a consultation with Manhattan dentist Dr. Chavez so we can examine your teeth and take x-rays to determine the extent of the damage. This will help us determine which restorative option is most suitable for you.

Enameloplasty – We will administer a local anesthetic to numb your mouth before using a dental drill. For dental crowns, we will need to file down your tooth proportionate to the thickness of the crown. For a dental bridge, two teeth on either side of the gap will need to be filed down and receive dental crowns.

Impressions – For both dental crowns and bridges, we will take impressions of your teeth and send them to a dental lab to create the prosthesis. The impressions of your teeth serve as a model for artificial crowns and pontic teeth. A shade guide will be used to match the color of the prosthesis to your natural teeth.

Fitting – It will take a few weeks for your crown or bridge to be fabricated. Until then, you will receive a temporary crown or dental bridge to restore tooth structure and function. Once your official prosthesis is ready, you’ll return to our Manhattan practice for another appointment and we’ll cement the restoration into place.

Why Do I Need A Crown Or Bridge?

A crown is used to protect a vulnerable or damaged tooth, whether it’s caused by tooth decay, dental trauma, or wear and tear. It can also be placed after a root canal because this treatment weakens the tooth.

The purpose of a dental crown is to restore the tooth structure when it has become worn down, cracked, or chipped and to provide strength and durability to the tooth so it can withstand the force of chewing. Crowns can also hold a bridge in place or be attached to dental implants.

A dental bridge is used to replace missing teeth in the mouth and is a fixed alternative to partial dentures. A bridge can replace a single tooth or up to 3 consecutive missing teeth. A pontic tooth is connected to two dental crowns and fills in the gap so you can chew, speak clearly, and enjoy your smile again.

How To Care For A New Crown Or Bridge

The most important habits you should get into to maintain your dental crowns or bridge are to maintain good oral hygiene and reduce wear and tear. Regularly brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day.

Don’t forget to floss every day and attend dental cleanings and checkups every 6 months. Avoid smoking, chewing hard or sticky foods, and don’t chew on objects. It’s important to wear a mouthguard if you grind your teeth at night.
