Considering Veneers? Here’s What You Need to Know.

best cosmetic dentist nyc

One of the best things about being a cosmetic dentist in NYC is getting to see people fall in love with their smile again. By the time we reach adulthood, our teeth have been through a full gamut of experiences — everything we’ve ever eaten, every sport we’ve ever played, all the times we brushed and flossed, all the times we didn’t, and much more. Sometimes, that lifetime of wear and tear can leave our teeth in a state that is less than pleasing to our eyes, and that can affect our comfort and confidence.

If you’re dealing with damaged, discolored, worn, chipped, misaligned, or irregularly spaced or shaped teeth, dental veneers may be the ideal solution to get you feeling great about your smile again. Here’s how they work.

At your initial consultation with Dr. Chavez, he will recommend either composite veneer fillings or porcelain full-coverage veneers. The type of veneer recommended to you very much depends on the unique condition of your teeth and gums. Dr. Chavez will explain his recommendation in detail and take impressions or X-rays of your teeth.

When your veneers are applied, a minimal amount of your original tooth will be removed to allow space for the veneer material to be attached. In some cases, gum contouring may be necessary to create the best, most-natural looking fit. You will receive numbing treatment before the procedure, so there will not be any pain. Soreness during recovery is minimal and easily mitigated with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Is Everyone a Candidate for Veneers?

If you grind your teeth or have significant tooth decay, veneers may not be your best option. Dr. Chavez will discuss all your treatment options with you during your consultation and you can decide together how best to move forward to achieve your healthiest smile.

Depending on the condition of your teeth, full porcelain veneers or composite veneer fillings may be recommended. The porcelain veneers are more durable and long lasting, but the composite veneers are sometimes the best solution for small cracks and chips rather than opting to cover the entire tooth.

Caring for Your Veneers

Once your veneers are in place, care for them just as you would your natural teeth — brushing and flossing frequently. Eliminate any rough use of your teeth such as nail biting, opening bottle caps with teeth, pulling on gloves with teeth, chewing pens or straws, and so on. You will want to minimize undue stress on your veneers.

If a veneer does become dislodged, don’t panic. Save it if you can and contact Dr. Chavez right away to let him know what happened. We’ll get you in for a fix right away.

We look forward to helping you love your smile!
