Good Things Start Here!
NEW YORK, NY 10022
Hey there, neighbors! I’m Dr. Chavez, and along with the amazing team here at Blue Line Dental in Midtown Manhattan, we’re thrilled to connect with you and share a bit about how we approach dentistry. We understand that the thought of a dental visit can sometimes bring up a bit of anxiety, and we want to change that. Here at Blue Line Dental, we’re not just about fixing problems; we’re about preventing them, using the latest technology, and ensuring you feel comfortable every step of the way.
The truth is, I’ve seen firsthand the impact that proper dental care can have. In our vibrant community here in Manhattan, I’ve noticed a particular issue crop up more often than others, and it’s something we see daily in our practice: malocclusion. And while it might sound technical, malocclusion is simply a fancy way of saying that your teeth aren’t perfectly aligned. Now, you might be thinking, “So what? My teeth are a little crooked.” But, believe it or not, how your teeth are positioned can have a significant impact on your oral health and overall well-being.
Let’s break down what malocclusion really means. Essentially, it refers to how your teeth come together when you bite. Ideally, your upper and lower teeth should meet in a way that distributes biting forces evenly. However, when teeth are misaligned or positioned improperly, that creates uneven pressure. And often times, I think maybe it’s because we’re New Yorkers, but many of us are constantly clenching and grinding our teeth. This, my friends, is called bruxism. So when your teeth aren’t in the right place, this grinding action can become pathological; that means, harmful to our teeth.
Think of it this way: if your car’s tires aren’t aligned, you’ll experience uneven wear and tear. Your teeth are no different. When teeth are not in their optimal position, you will find premature wear; they just won’t last as long. And what is premature wear? Well, over time, this leads to premature aging of your smile. Nobody wants worn, uneven teeth. The key to keeping your teeth looking super young, healthy, and vibrant is proper alignment. So, you see, how our teeth are positioned matters a great deal.
It’s why we emphasize preventative care so much. It’s more than just brushing and flossing; it’s about recognizing how your teeth work together, identifying potential problems early, and taking action to prevent them from becoming major concerns.
At Blue Line Dental, we’re truly passionate about preventative care. We see your twice-yearly checkups as an opportunity to do so much more than just a basic cleaning. In fact, I really feel like when we see you every six months, we’re going above and beyond simply treating problems. We’re being preventative! By seeing you consistently, we can monitor for any early signs of trouble and treat them while they’re still small issues, with the most conservative treatment option. Catching things early allows us to keep treatments simple.
Another important aspect of preventative care that’s often overlooked is oral cancer screenings. With every check-up, we perform a thorough screening. Oral cancer is something that needs to be caught as early as possible. And, here at Blue Line Dental, we’re committed to making sure we’re proactively checking for it with each and every one of our patients. It is vitally important, and we believe, our responsibility to our patients.
Now, as important as preventative care is for adults, it’s absolutely critical for children. If you’re a parent, you know that instilling good habits in kids can be a challenge! I always advise parents that, first and foremost, they need to have good oral hygiene habits themselves. Kids learn by example, so they must also see you taking care of your teeth. When we’re modeling the behaviors we want to see in our children, that’s half the battle won.
But how do we actually instill those habits? Well, it’s simple: twice-daily brushing is a must, and as soon as your children get a little older, we need to start incorporating flossing into their routines. So much of tooth decay happens in between the teeth, and brushing alone just can’t get to those areas. So, flossing is crucial for keeping those spaces clean, resulting in fewer cavities. And, of course, bring your kids into the dental office early. Once your child has teeth, bring them in. We might not do much at first, just a simple “meet and greet,” where they sit in the chair, look at our tools, and get familiar with our office, so that as they get older and come every six months, it becomes less scary. It will become a place that they’re now comfortable visiting, with familiar faces. That way, when they’re ready for that cleaning, it won’t be scary! For us, that’s most important. We want to create a lifetime of good dental habits for your children, and it all starts with that first visit.
To help make it fun for children, we use timers and fun toothbrushes with their favorite characters on them! We also want to make sure that you’re using a toothpaste that’s appropriate for their age and is something they’ll enjoy. That means making sure it is a fun flavor but, importantly, that the kids don’t eat it! My own children love eating it, but we must be mindful.
I also like to brush with my own kids, so they can see how important it is and how it should be done, and then, of course, I always check to make sure they’re doing a good job. You always want to do that as they’re developing their skills; and as they get older, their manual dexterity will get better, and they can become more independent in their own hygiene habits.
Here at Blue Line Dental, we are committed to keeping up with the latest advancements in dental technology. One of the most exciting innovations in dentistry, for me, is 3D printing. 3D printing is completely revolutionizing dentistry; there are so many things that we can now print right here in our office! This means things like night guards, retainers, and even temporary restorations. If someone comes in with a missing tooth, we can print a tooth to place in that space as a temporary option, until we have a more definitive plan. The versatility of 3D dentistry is just phenomenal, and we love where it’s headed.
We actually have a 3D printer here in our office, and we use it to print models for retainers and other applications. This has been amazing because it gives me full control of the product, from design to material, ensuring that they fit perfectly. Plus, it allows us to provide you with your appliance or product a lot faster, since we don’t have to send things out to the lab and wait for them to be sent back. We are able to complete the process quickly, which really benefits our patients.
Another invaluable tool that we think every dentist should have, and that we have at Blue Line Dental, is an intraoral scanner. I perform an intraoral scan on all of my patients each visit; we call it a “wellness scan”. It essentially takes a series of pictures of your teeth and digitally records how your teeth are aligned and how they come together. And we keep that scan digitally for years to come. This gives us a baseline of what your teeth look like today, and that is critically important for keeping track of your dental health. For example, if I see that your gum recession is getting worse or that you’re grinding your teeth down more than we previously saw, I can show you how your teeth have changed over time and discuss ways to address it. We actually rescan our patients every 3 years, and we can overlay those scans and show you exactly what’s happening. This tool allows us to detect things that could be a problem and take a proactive approach in treating them. It really provides for better care of our patients without a doubt!
I truly believe that a positive experience is the most important factor in quality dental care. In fact, if you aren’t comfortable, you just aren’t going to have that positive experience, and that’s what we’re looking to give to all of our patients, here in Midtown Manhattan. One of the ways we aim to make sure you have a great experience is by having TVs on the ceilings with noise canceling headphones. It really helps so many patients! You can put on some Netflix and catch up on a show, and just zone out and be distracted from the dental work, and it’s kind of like having anesthesia in a sense.
Another important tool in creating a comfortable experience is explaining things to you. We know you’ll be more relaxed if you understand what we’re doing and what to expect next. So, we make sure that nothing we do is ever a surprise. We make sure to provide you with a heads up, so you know what’s coming next, and that you’re comfortable.
The new patient experience here at Blue Line Dental is one that we have really worked hard to make great. From the moment you give us a call at (212) 317-5959 to schedule your appointment, or schedule online, we make it as easy as possible. And when you arrive, you’ll even meet those people you spoke with on the phone! We believe that that personal connection is so important. While you wait for your appointment, we offer you water and coffee. And once you’re in the chair, we focus on the comprehensive wellness exam that I mentioned earlier. This includes an oral cancer screening, a periodontal screening (checking your gum health), and an occlusion screening (checking your tooth position), in addition to the wellness scan. It truly gives us an overall picture of your dental health. With the wellness scan, you can actually see your entire mouth laid out in front of you in a 3D image. All of your old fillings, tooth positions and everything else we discussed previously will all be very clear. Then, of course, we move on to the cleaning, and you have the option of having headphones and Netflix while we do so.
But it doesn’t just end at the first appointment. Every time you come in, you’ll get this same experience: the oral cancer screening, periodontal screening, occlusion screening, and everything else. We want to always be able to treat you to the best of our abilities and comprehensively.
Now, let’s address a common misconception. So many people think that going to the dentist is painful, and, frankly, we think this is one of the reasons that so many people avoid the dentist. But, I can confidently say that that is just so far from the truth! With how far technology has come in dentistry, there are so many things that we can do to make patients comfortable, and to ensure you are not feeling pain while undergoing treatment. That alone, I think, keeps too many people away from the dentist.
At Blue Line Dental, we want to change that narrative. We wanted to create a space where this misconception no longer holds true, and we truly do bend over backwards to make sure that you’re happy in the chair, when you come in, and when you leave. We want to create a dental experience that changes what you might have expected from a visit to the dentist.
At Blue Line Dental in Midtown Manhattan, our aim is to provide you with the most modern dental care in a comfortable, caring environment. From the initial phone call to our thorough checkups and technologically advanced treatments, we are dedicated to your overall oral health and well-being. We are committed to delivering preventative, comprehensive care and using the latest technology to make sure that you have a great experience with us. We truly believe that dentistry doesn’t have to be something to fear. We look forward to welcoming you into our practice and helping you achieve a healthy, vibrant smile.
