Veneers Vs. Dental Bonding: What’s Best For Me?

If you’re looking for ways to enhance your smile, you have many options available, from mild, like dental bonding to the more dramatic like veneers.

Veneers and dental bonding are two popular dental cosmetic procedures, but there are key differences between them when it comes to their effect, procedure, issues they can address, and even cost. So which one is right for you?

Find out the answer in this short blog post from Blue Line Dental!

What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a procedure that involves applying a special resin to the natural tooth, which can be modeled by the dentist to change the size and even shape of the tooth. It’s a simple and completely reversible procedure that can have a great change on the way your teeth look.

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are a form of dental prosthetic that get attached to the surface of your natural teeth. They can change the look of your entire smile and give you a completely different appearance in just one session.

What Are the Differences Between Them?

Even from their definition, it’s clear that dental bonding and veneers are two very different procedures. However, other elements separate the two, and it’s important to truly understand them when trying to decide which is right for you:

  • Treatment Process – Dental bonding is applied directly on your natural tooth, giving it the desired shape, and then hardened with a special light. Veneers have a more complex procedure where the dentist needs to shave a bit of the tooth’s natural enamel to create a rough surface texture. This helps the veneers properly bind to the teeth;
  • Duration of the Effect – Dental bonding is not permanent, and will usually last 5-10 years before it needs to be replaced. Veneers can last much longer with the right care, and some patients can go as long as 30 years with them;
  • Changes to Your Natural Teeth – Veneers do affect your natural teeth, and if you want to take them off you either need a new pair or another cosmetic procedure because of the shaved enamel. Dental bonding does not affect your natural teeth;
  • The Cosmetic Issues They Can Address – Dental bonding is designed for minor cosmetic issues, and is usually not used for more dramatic cosmetic make-overs like veneers;
  • The Cost of the Procedure – Dental bonding is cheaper than veneers because it doesn’t last as long and it’s usually done for minor cosmetic issues.
